A Family Tradition

Harold and Edith Kohn
Mr. Kohn’s legal practice is rooted in three generations of Kohn lawyers.
Elias Kohn’s grandfather, Harold Elias Kohn, has been called the “grandfather of class actions” and the “architect of the modern-day class action.” During one of Harold’s arguments before the United States Supreme Court, Justice Felix Frankfurter wrote a note to his law clerk urging him to watch “the excellent lawyer” at work. Harold was also an outspoken critic of excessive legal fees and often challenged his colleagues to reduce contingency fees in the interest of their clients.
Mr. Kohn’s father, Joe Kohn, carried the tradition forward, challenging inflated legal fees and securing major settlements across a wide spectrum of complex litigation, including antitrust, securities, product liability, environmental, lender liability, employment, and civil-rights matters. He has been repeatedly appointed lead counsel in nationwide class actions and other multi-party cases, cementing the Kohn family’s legacy in high-stakes litigation.
Elias Kohn takes pride in continuing the family tradition of delivering exceptional legal representation in matters that advance positive social impact. He also upholds the Kohn legacy of rejecting unfair and unreasonable billing practices that pervade much of the legal profession.
